Something absolutely essential: Ask your people what they think. Make sure they know that you care about their opinion. Strive to meet a compromise so that everyone is involved in the decision. If every team member has a chance to negotiate, they're less likely to be upset with the outcome, even if no one gets everything they want. If you assert your authority and blow people down, they'll be bitter and won't accept any part of the result.
