FontStruct is a web app for making a font by placing simple shapes on a grid. You do it all in the browser, and then you can download it as a TrueType font. Every font made with the app comes with a Creative Commons license, and there's a gallery with some good examples. Zara Evans on Typophile.com started a battle to make a usable font with FontStruct, and has already garnered some impressive entries.
