How to Shelve Pasta/  /March 09, 2005

In case there is a young bachelor out there who cooks pasta sometimes, I wish to impart this wisdom to you (O Bachelor):

When replacing an opened bag of pasta to the top shelf, do not place it with the open side toward the back of the shelf (thinking "Oh, the closed end will portect it from spilling out")—instead, place it with the open side toward the room, thinking, "Ah, when I lift the bag, the pasta will come with the bag and not remain partly on the shelf, falling onto my head."

A young bachelor might also choose to store pasta standing up in a jar, or sealed in a ziploc bag...

For all you bachelors concerned about your heads not just pastawise but otherwise, I'd advise the two following constraints to piling up the dishes.

  1. Don't stack them higher than your shoulders.
  2. Even though a cutting board balanced on two disjoint counters can in principle act as a "bridge", providing more space to stack dishes, this is not advisable.
