It's a bit suspicious when a philosopher, or anyone writing 'philosophy,' throws a definite article in front of a commonplace phrase and starts inquiring into its essence. What if it doesn't have an essence? What if it's just a phrase? What if it's used loosely, improvisationally, or associatively? What if its function is merely to lend a certain air to a described thing?
