Unknown,
If you saw an unattended package,
would you report it?
I really doubt it. I don't want to participate in the culture of fear.
No? You wouldn't feel any fear yourself?
Announcements in airports have been asking us to report attended baggage for decades now. I always figured if I saw one I'd do my bit. Is anything different now that fear is owned by the dominant party?
I've heard those announcements with contempt ever since they started. An airport would be a more likely place for me to worry, though. An inherently suspicious-looking package would exert some influence too.
But in general, unattended packages are essentially never anything to worry about, statistically. Someone just had to pee, or forgot something, or whatever.
By calling cops in, I waste their time, and subject some poor bastard to contact with them, which I find extremely hard to justify.
I don't want to give in to an irrational fear. I try to determine which ones are rational by a pragmatic weighing of the likelihood of an event and its potential damages vs. the damages caused by acting to prevent it (loss of time and mental energy, bad vibes, etc.)
Also, on a level which I can't say much to justify, my instinct is that ill-founded fears eventually call their own objects into actual existence. That's why I would generally be slow to report such a thing.
Hmm, I was a bit cranky last night. I certainly don't mean to suggest I have a monopoly on reasonably deciding what to fear, and by no means can I empirically back up my assertion that packages are nothing to worry about.
In the end, I just don't want to live in a society where you have to report every package. That desire for me is stronger than the fear engendered by this package, argal I don't report it.
Hope all's well out West.
