When I was waiting for the train today, two kid were out on the platform waiting with their mom. One was precociously plugging his ears. The other was holding his arms out to the side. Comme ca:

Why was he holding his arms out like that? Because he was a wily little guy, I imagine; because despite his tranquility he was thronging with life.

When the doors of the train opened one of them shouted "Daddy!"

Ah!

When I grow up, I want to be the kind of person who kids like that could be excited to see.

The Astros have been in even worse shape, using three starters with less than two years of major-league experience. Signing Clemens to go with right-hander Roy Oswalt and left-hander Andy Pettitte again gives them a legitimate Big Three once again. If Clemens, after several minor-league tuneups, proves anywhere near as good as he was last season, he will give the team precisely the lift it needs.
