The Mosquito Becomes a Behemoth/  /September 02, 2003

Here, here. That's putting it concisely, at last.

Compare: in Fight Club, two dudes invigorate their lives with some visceral activity, and spread the good word. Everyone who participates is turned on; they each find an individual strength that over-rides the stagnation of their corporate lives as well as that of their group-therapy lives. At a certain point, their club turns into an institution, the individualism is trumped by collectivism, the flywheel becomes dangerous and uncontrollable. The founder is mythologized and can't be found; his proverbs propel the zealots; eventually the world crumbles (it remains to be seen whether or not "wiping out the credit record" really resets civilization to zero)

New Criticism, postmodernism, Fight Club. It happens. It's why Jerzy Grotowski started his work over again every dozen years or so, and why he resisted the transcription of his activities. So: resist the codification of your techniques. Keep honoring the original conceptions you find yourself having.

The Astros have been in even worse shape, using three starters with less than two years of major-league experience. Signing Clemens to go with right-hander Roy Oswalt and left-hander Andy Pettitte again gives them a legitimate Big Three once again. If Clemens, after several minor-league tuneups, proves anywhere near as good as he was last season, he will give the team precisely the lift it needs.
